SINGAPORE, March 28, 2009: West Side Jam 2009 presented by Maxout Hydrosports came to a resounding close on the 8th of March with nearly 500 spectators and competitors battling it out to be crowned champions in their respective categories.
From 7-8 March 2009, the super-yacht berth along Raffles Marina was transformed into a seafront stadium, playing host to the wildest weekend-long triple wake festival held in Singapore. Festival revelers partied to fantastic music; a premier wakeboard, wakeskate, and wakesurf tournament; a convoy of WSJ-appointed partying yachts, as well as festival-exclusive sponsor booths.
Catching the limelight was the International Triple Wake Competition that showcased a skill-challenging obstacle-laden pass. The internationally diverse competitors’ list saw riders coming from as far away as the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as regionally from Japan and Thailand to participate in the competition.
For wakeboarding, the Open category saw AJ Racinelli from the US (Champion, 2007 Junior Men’s Pro Tour) compete head-on with Padiwat “Bomb” Jaemjan from Thailand (6th, 2008 WWA World’s). After a close final, which saw a bevy of explosive wake tricks and very technical obstacle feats, Padiwat Jaemjan ultimately emerged victorious, defending his Open Champion title for the 2nd year running.
Singapore’s very own Sasha Christian, national wakeboarding champion in the women’s category, took the crown from defending champion Japan’s Ayako Miyazaki and top qualifier Megumi Tomagechi.
Wakeskating had no lack of excitement, where Daniel Grant, a British national representing Thailand, all of only 11 years of age, surpassed experienced wakeskaters Didi Anwar and Nagahisa Matsukawa to claim the champion position. While accepting his award, he paid compliments to his peers from Thailand and ended with his claim to fame of “I have no fear because I am young.” Here is a rider to watch out for in the coming years as his skills improve.
West Side Jam was not solely dedicated to activities on the water. Off the water, Wicked Aura Battucada, worked up the crowd with their infectious beats and hilarious antics. To further raise the temperature, the FHM Fishhead Bikini contest was held over the two days with 15 lovely ladies competing to win the affections of the crowd and the judges. This was a resounding success with everyone having a fantastic time cheering the ladies on. At night, the event geared down at the Raffles Marina poolside with a bar run by Mimolette and the party fantastically organised by Rightclicka.
Mr Ryan Lee, Managing Director of Maxout Hydrosports said, “ This annual event has grown larger and more successful solely due to the support of the community and our many sponsors and we look forward to having an even bigger and better West Side Jam 2010.”
